Biodynamic agriculture in practice with nettle, horsetail, and more
At Castello dei Rampolla, spring is a crucial moment in the rhythm of our vineyards. As the young vine shoots emerge, delicate and full of potential, we accompany their growth with natural, respectful treatments grounded in the principles of biodynamic agriculture and regenerative viticulture.
In these early days of the season, we spray our vines with infusions of nettle and horsetail—two powerful yet gentle allies. These herbal macerates have been used in natural farming for centuries: nettle stimulates plant vitality and boosts growth, while horsetail, rich in naturalsilica, helps strengthen the plant’s defenses against fungal diseases such as mildew.
To reinforce the efficacy of this herbal treatment, we combine them with a blend of other low-impact, nature-derived substances:
- Propolis, a resinous compound produced by bees, known for its antimicrobial and antifungal properties. It acts as a natural shield for the vine’s delicate tissues.
- Prevam, an essential oil blend derived from citrus peel, is an eco-friendly and biodegradable alternative to conventional treatments, offering both preventive and curative effects.
- ElioCuivre, a micro-dosed copper formulation, allows us to protect our vines from disease without harming the environment or disturbing the equilibrium of the soil and microbiome. Its gentle, targeted action is fully aligned with our biodynamic methos.
This integrated approach is more than a protocol—it’s a philosophy. Every product we apply is carefully selected not only for its effectiveness but for its compatibility with the living ecosystem of our land.

In our vineyard, pollinators and beneficial insects are not only tolerated—they are protected and welcomed. These days, the flowering phacelia paints the vineyard with hues of violet. Known as amelliferous plant, phacelia is a favorite of bees, supporting their health and enriching the biodiversity of our environment. None of the treatments we use are harmful to bees or other beneficial organisms: they are conceived with the entire ecosystem in mind.
This is the essence of Castello dei Rampolla’s vision—a vineyard that listens to nature, learns from her, and gives back. Biodynamic agriculture is not a trend for us; it is a long-standing commitment to respect the land, the rhythms of the cosmos, and the intricate web of life within which the vine grows.
Through every decision—be it a plant we sow, a treatment we apply, or a technique we choose—we strive to cultivate not only exceptional grapes, but also a living, thriving landscape that endures and regenerates itself year after year.
